Choose a Breeder with Care
You should spend as much time choosing a breeder as you do choosing the breed of your new puppy.
We have compiled a short list for you to consider when selecting the breeder:
Remember:
It is important that you and your breeder maintain a friendly relationship, as your breeder is a valuable source of helpful information to you.
Do not be afraid to ask questions. This will help to reassure the breeder that you are indeed a trustworthy and loving family for their Berner baby.
We have compiled a short list for you to consider when selecting the breeder:
- A CKC Registered kennel simply implies that the breeder has registered the name of their kennel with the Canadian Kennel Club and that alone does not speak to the ethics of the breeder.
- They do not have to be CKC members but all puppies and breeding dogs must be registered with the CKC.
- If puppies are not registered with the CKC, or are not eligible be registered (i.e. parents are not registered or they are on a non-breeding contract) they cannot be sold as purebred, this is a law with the department of agriculture of Canada.
- Some (I would check with the constitution and by-laws of the club the see what the club says about this) clubs ask that all breeding stock and off spring be entered in Berner-Garde, and have completed certain health tests, before breeding.
- Berner-Garde Foundation: (Follow the link on the “Helpful Links” page to learn about this very worthwhile foundation) Reputable breeders will enter their dogs into Berner-Garde and each of their dogs will have a unique number assigned by Berner-Garde. They register all their litters and individual puppies born to them with the CKC.
- A club breeder means the breeder is a member of a specific dog club and is normally governed by that club’s Code of Ethics, Breed Standard, and will breed to maintain/promote the Breed Standards.
